Moving to college can be a stress-free endeavor

August 11, 2010 - Despite being an emotional time, moving to college doesn't have to be a stressful undertaking for students and parents.

Keeping a positive attitude and knowing that there are likely many other students who are just as nervous as they are can help soothe a new college freshman's nerves, said HealthDay. New collegians should not be afraid to approach other students and make some friends, and they should take the time to grow familiar with their new surroundings. Students can also meet new people by taking part in campus events, but they should still focus on schoolwork and take safety measures while on campus, said the report.

On top of that, parents can help by staying supportive but keeping their distance. Families should send letters and photos to stay in contact, but should never drop in for a visit unless they've told their child ahead of time. It is important for the parent to allow their new college student to develop some level of independence.

Most families use their car to move their kid's belongings to school, although renting a moving storage unit can help them transport a large amount of items.
