Pictures could help sellers get moving

October 13, 2010 - Though they may be reluctant to pay the extra money, many homesellers could help their own cause by getting hold of a high-quality camera.

That's because high-quality photos are often the biggest selling point in a real estate listing, Realtor Marty Boardman wrote for Inman News. He recommended that when listing their home, a relocating family invest in a high-quality digital camera and learn some tricks of the trade when it comes to taking good photos. Adding a top-notch picture of their home to a real estate listing could make a big difference in attracting relocating homebuyers.

Boardman advised that sellers research camera costs and features to find the best tool for them. Once they've bought a good camera, sellers should take steps to ensure their pictures don't look like they were taken by an amateur. That includes turning off the date stamp feature, avoiding shooting directly into the sun and catching their own reflection in a mirror when they take a photo of a bedroom. Additionally, sellers should never take a picture from their car and should avoid capturing any pets or people in their image.

A recent report in the Wall Street Journal echoed the importance of high-quality photos in a moving listing. Citing data from brokerage Redfin, the report found that listings with higher-quality photos often sold quicker and for more money.
