Minnesota woman relocated her childhood home across the yard
August 10, 2010 - Not everyone can return to their childhood home once they've moved out. So when Minnesota resident Donna Chapel heard that the 19th-century-era home she grew up in was going to be torn down, she decided to relocate it.
Chapel's brother owns the family property, and had decided to tear down the mid-1800s log cabin. Chapel, who lives a little over three miles away, opted to move the home, where it sits across the yard from her current residence, reported Wisconsin's LaCrosse Tribune.
Experts told her the home couldn't be moved in one piece, so it was taken apart and rebuilt on her property in 2002.
"It was kind of like Lincoln Logs," Chapel told the Tribune about how they rebuilt the 150-year-old cabin.
Chapel told the paper the cabin is a "symbol of family," and remembers the frigid Minnesota winters spent next to the fireplace.
Chapel's family home isn't the only 19th-century building to be relocated. The historic Gingerbread House in Maine, built in the 1850s, is scheduled to be moved later this summer to a different property in order to save it from demolition, reported Maine's Sun-Journal.
