Maryland city among best for raising children

September 2, 2010 - Families that are moving with children may want to consider relocating to Ellicott City, Maryland.

That city's safe neighborhoods, relatively low cost-of-living compared to neighboring suburbs and strong school system make it among the best cities to raise a family, reported Kiplinger. The city is also located just 20 minutes from downtown Baltimore and 50 minutes from Washington, D.C. - placing it not far from central hubs for employment. The one downside for the city may be high traffic, which can clog highways heading towards those two major cities.

Other cities on the list - including Rochester, Minnesota; College Station, Texas and Madison, Wisconsin, were praised for their top-notch education systems - often one of the strongest points of concern for a relocating family. Ann Arbor, Michigan was highlighted for its low crime rate and progressive education system. Also to that city's credit was its prime location near several major institutes of learning, including the University of Michigan.

Top school systems can often be a big draw for families that are moving with children. According to Forbes, home prices in cities with high-ranked school districts are often higher than those in surrounding areas.
