Disaster proofing a home

June 21, 2010 - When moving to a new home, it's important to look into what natural disasters are likely to occur in that area. That way, a person can take all the necessary precautions in order to protect their property.

No matter where a person relocates to, there are some all-purpose tips that can be helpful to everyone. Some precautions are cost-free while others may incur a fee.

Some simple things consumers can do include putting heavier objects on shelves lower to the ground, hanging objects on walls away from the bed, and fixing cracks in a home's foundation or ceiling, FEMA said. Flammable products should also be kept away from any heating sources.

One of the most important things a person should do is to make sure they have proper insurance coverage, FEMA said. Consumers should speak to an insurance agent about what type of policy is best for them dependent on the area in which they live. FEMA also suggests getting flood insurance.

However, it's particularly difficult for consumers to obtain flood insurance right now. The National Flood Insurance Program has come to a halt again this year, making it impossible for insurers to provide coverage until it has been resumed again.
