Homeowners and renters insurance tips for newlyweds

February 24, 2010 - Individuals who are planning to get married and start a family have many things to consider when choosing a starter home - including their renters or homeowners insurance.

When couples are deciding where they will relocate together, they should also compare the insurance premiums of each home they take into consideration, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The location, size and construction type of a residence can all affect premium amounts.

New homeowners or renters may be able to receive discounts on their insurance if their home has been insured for a long period of time, so couples may be able to save if one partner has lived in the same place for awhile.

Newlyweds should also ensure that their coverage will include valuable items or upcoming projects, such as relocation or home repair and maintenance. The NAIC recommends that couples make an inventory of their belongings and continuously update this list to include new items, such as wedding gifts. In addition, families should check their coverage before they begin home improvement projects that are expected to cost $5,000 or more.
