Economic troubles lead to more home security systems

October 4, 2010 - Once they've finished unpacking their moving boxes, a number of homeowners are getting home security systems installed in their new homes.

The website InstantSpy.net shows a clear rise in the number of burglar alarms that have been sold in recent months. The company reports that though many homeowners are cutting back on other expenses in light of the country's economic hardships, many consumers are still willing to spend money on preventative measures like home security systems. That could be because troubled economic times have put many consumers on edge and concerned for their personal safety, said company sales manager Nicholas Halmond.

"I think that in times of difficulty, individuals are more likely to commit crimes, poverty increases and so do the chances of suffering a home invasion," said Halmond. "People are willing to spend on an alarm system or security camera system because they feel the need for protection at the moment."

Safety concerns often come up when families assess their moving plans, and some cities rank better than others. A recent report from Underwriters Laboratories and Sperling's Best Places ranked the city of Boston as the safest city for families with young children.
