Home security may need additional attention over the holidays
December 23, 2010 - While many individuals will spend the holiday season dreading next month's credit card bills or praying the weather will not affect their travel plans, homeowners and renters alike may want to pay extra attention to home security.
An increase in gift buying and a great deal of travel will leave many residences susceptible to robberies in coming weeks, which may be prevented if individuals who plan to leave their homes take precautions to protect them.
The Public Safety Department of Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, recommends travelers make their homes look like someone is home at all times, Fox 11 reports.
Homeowners may ask friends or neighbors to check their mail and newspaper deliveries, shovel snow or stop by their house on occasion. Setting lights, televisions and radios on automated timers may also deter burglars.
Despite these measures, approximately 1.6 million homes in the U.S. were burglarized last year, which resulted in an average loss of $2,060 per family, CBS News reports.
Accordingly, some homeowners may consider installing security cameras or alarm systems on their property to deter theft during the busy holiday season.
