All I want for Christmas is a new house
December 14, 2010 - After a difficult economic year, many Americans are wishing big this holiday season.
According to a recent survey by Weichert, Realtors, 51 percent of respondents said a new home was the number one item on their wish list.
The survey also found that a majority, 55 percent, of those surveyed preferred to spend the holidays in their own home.
James M. Weichert, president and founder of Weichert, Realtors, said, "From a mantle to hang the stockings to a roof to display the lights to a dining table to gather around, a home offers many ways to celebrate the holidays and share special moments with family and friends."
While the holidays may be great time for family gatherings, homeowners and renters ought to be aware of potential fire risks associated with the season and take precaution to prevent them.
The National Fire Protection Agency offers several tips to stay safe this season. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. When hanging lights, don't connect more than three sets of mini lights together and be sure to read whether lights are for indoor or outdoor only usage.
Additionally, keep children and pets away from lit candles and ask guests to smoke outside. When cooking on the stovetop, be sure to stay in the kitchen and keep a mindful eye on the stove.
