February 28, 2011 - A majority of Americans agreed securing a home inspection before moving day saved them the headaches of potential problems down the road.According to a survey by Harris Interactive on behalf of the American Society of Home Inspectors, 90 percent of Americans said home inspections were an absolute necessity before moving into a new property. In addition, 72 percent said their own inspection helped them avoid potential problems when they bought their new home, while 64 percent said the process actually saved them money in the long run.At the same time, many consumers had a cloudy idea of just what components are normally reviewed during a home inspection, while 70 percent assumed all home inspectors are licensed - a common misconception, said Kurt Salomon, the group's president."It is important for consumers to do their homework before hiring an inspector," said Salomon, adding that "It is encouraging to know consumers are listening and understand the significance of protecting their largest single investment, their home."Home inspections become particularly important at a time when many consumers are moving into distressed properties. Foreclosures can often be in worse condition than other homes.
