Time Warner Cable to raise rates

January 7, 2010 - Time Warner Cable has announced it will raise its rates beginning in February, the Buffalo News reports.

Subscribers are expected to see their bills increase by 6.4 to 12 percent, depending on the package they receive. Individuals who receive standard service from the company will see an increase of approximately $5 per month, according to the news source.

Internet and telephone customers will also be affected by the rate hikes, as the cost of bundled packages that include these services will increase by 6.4 percent to $144.95 per month.

Jeff Unatis, a regional vice president for Time Warner, attributed the rising costs to increased programming fees from cable and broadcast networks as well as increased operational expenses, the Daily Star reports.

Improvements have been made to some of the company's offerings, including its Road Runner service, he added.

Higher charges from the company may prove beneficial to individuals who wish to change their cable television provider, as these increases could ignite competition between companies.

Brian Dietz, a spokesperson for the National Cable and Telecommunications Association, told the Buffalo News that "the best news for consumers is that they have a multitude of choices."
