New fiber-optic TV service hits Pennsylvania town

November 6, 2010 - For those of you who wish to upgrade your cable TV service, Verizon FiOS is now available in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Verizon's fiber optic network will be offered to more than 3,100 households in parts of Allentown where the company says it will provide 128 high-definition channels, more video on demand and faster internet speeds than regular cable TV.

Verizon also had several bundling plans that consumers can select. FiOS TV service can be packaged together with FiOS internet service, Freedom Essentials unlimited calling plan. Another bundle includes Verizon's cell phone service.

A ChangeWave consumer survey conducted earlier this year, found that 65 percent of consumers subscribed to cable TV, while 25 percent had satellite TV and 11 percent used fiber-optic, cites Seeking Alpha.

The survey also found that regarding customer satisfaction, fiber-optic providers scored the best, with 38 percent of consumers responding "very satisfied" compared with 27 percent for satellite TV subscribers and only 13 percent of cable subscribers.

Only 12 percent of respondents said they planned on switching their TV service providers in the next six months, but of those who did, 50 percent said that price was their number one reason, while only 10 percent listed bundling options as their top reason to change.
