Homebuyers putting priority on high-speed internet

March 10, 2011 - A survey out of the United Kingdom shows more consumers say a property's quality of internet access is an important factor they'll consider when shopping for the next home they'll be moving to.

According to the survey, conducted by ISP Review, homebuyers would actually be somewhat turned off from an attractive home if it was not equipped for internet access. In fact, 73.9 percent said broadband was critically important to their home life, and a lack of a fast broadband connection would force 68.8 percent of respondents to reconsider their home purchase. While only 49.5 percent said they would pay more for a home with a fast internet connection, 62.7 percent said they would do so for quicker internet service in a hotel room.

The report concluded access to the internet has become a major concern for most relocating consumers, suggesting that a lack of connectivity could even affect a property's value.

Perhaps drawing on that understanding, one UK real estate listing site announced it would include broadband speeds of properties on their site. A spokesperson with Rightmove said the aim was to allow relocating families a chance to weed out homes that didn't have high-speed internet.
