Missouri on the road to greater online service
December 2, 2010 - Missourians are soon to become more wired.
The Show Me State was awarded a $1.9 million in a federal Recovery Act grant to expand high-speed internet to rural areas of the state.
The Associated Press reports that the state will use the money to map existing broadband coverage and find gaps in the service.
Missouri governor, Jay Nixon, said, "There are a multitude of benefits to education, healthcare, commerce and consumers from having broadband reach into every corner of Missouri, and we will continue our work to make this a reality."
Kansas City Internet infoZine reports that the state hopes to receive funding to make broadband accessible to 91.5 percent of the state's population, a considerable increase from its current 79.7 percent availability.
When choosing an internet provider, homeowners and renters need to research services available in their area. Some of the most common types of home internet services are cable, which is wired through your cable network, DSL, which connects through your phone and fiber optics, which may be the way of the future of internet technology and provides one of the fastest connections.
