Utah officials aim to help renters fight non-smoking policy violations

March 11, 2010 - In an attempt to fight the health hazards of smoking in apartment and condominium complexes, state officials in Ogden, Utah have aired a series of advertisements explaining the effects of secondhand smoke, StandardNET reports.

The campaign began as an effort to help renters whose health has been compromised due to their neighbors' smoking habits. According to the news source, this problem is common among renters - even those who live in non-smoking buildings - but few individuals are aware of their rights.

Officials recommend that prospective tenants understand the unit's smoking policy and the consequences for breaking it before they sign a lease. This will give them more leverage when they choose to complain to their landlord about their neighbor's smoking behavior.

If these individuals do inform their landlord of the problem and no action is taken, they can contact their local health department and ask them to send a representative to reiterate any applicable laws. Renters who have existing health problems - such as asthma or another breathing disability - may want to get documentation from their doctor in case they are asked to prove that the smoke is detrimental to their health.

Individuals who want to ensure their buildings will be smoke-free may want to limit their research to databases of nonsmoking units, such as the Smokefree Apartment House Registry.
