Finding next year's off-campus apartment
March 7, 2011 - With the second semester at many universities in full swing, a number of undergraduate students may already be considering their future relocation out of a dormitory and into their own off-campus apartment.
A report in the University of North Carolina's Daily Tar Heel said many first-time apartment seekers may not even be sure where to begin. Though it's a popular idea for many undergrads to transition to an rental later in their college career, many need help getting started, and the source says word of mouth may actually be their best tool. Gina Turner, a local property manager, told the paper that while listing sites and search engines may also help, new applicants often find her through current tenants.
Students should also make a list of things they require in their apartment, such as proximity to public transportation, shopping centers, internet, and other considerations. Once a student has identified an apartment her or she likes, they need to schedule a viewing and be prepared to ask questions regarding rent prices, utility costs and co-signing.
Though Craigslist has long been a popular listing destination for students seeking apartments, many are now finding leads through social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter.
