College students may want to start looking for rental homes now

February 22, 2010 - College students who are looking for off-campus apartments may want to consider consulting a real estate agent soon to ensure that their housing needs for next year are met.

The Daily Camera reports that students at the University of Colorado tend to prefer large homes that can fit a great deal of people, as having multiple roommates can reduce rent and utility costs. Students who live in larger units may also be able to split the cost of additional amenities, such as dishwashers, in-house laundry facilities or pet-friendly buildings.

Tom Orlando, relocation director for Housing Helpers in Boulder, told the news source that single-family homes with three to six bedrooms are the quickest to go.

While living with several other people can cut costs, the newspaper suggests that potential renters consider overall utility costs, a property's proximity to parking or public transportation, the landlord's deposit requirements and personal expenses when choosing a new home.

According the RealFact.com, average rent in the U.S. dropped 6.1 percent last year to $933 per month, the Daily Skiff reports.
