The area remained under French control until 1761, when the British took control of the Bay and the settlement that had grown there. After the War 1812, the Americans finally gained control of Northeastern Wisconsin. Green Bay was incorporated as a city in 1854. Two years later, the Green Bay Area Public School District was founded.
