Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Brownsville, Texas

You’ve told your friends, packed your moving boxes and cancelled your newspaper subscription. It’s official: you’re moving to Brownsville, Texas! Before you start researching Brownsville movers, there are a few things you must remember about the lovely Texan city that will soon be your new home. For starters, you might have to get used to tasty, authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. Located on the banks of the Rio Grande and just steps from Mexico and sister city Matamoros, Brownsville is a semi-tropical paradise where two cultures meet to create the perfect leisure travel destination. With unsurpassed opportunities for work, business, and manufacture on both sides of the border, Brownsville is one of the fastest growing regions in the U.S. Now that’s something to raise a toast to— with tequila, of course.

Economy:
Whether you are moving to Brownsville to live, work, study or do business, you’ll reap the benefits of Brownsville’s business-friendly climate, well-developed infrastructure and high-skilled workforce. As the sixth fastest growing manufacturing region in the U.S., Brownsville leverages its position as a major hub for international trade. Manufacturing, agriculture, shipping and retail are the principal industries in Brownsville. Mexico’s manufacturing plants, or maquiladoras, continue to boost trade and create jobs for residents on both sides of the border. Transportation and customs services in Texas have flourished due to large trade inflows in the border region. The agriculture industry also plays an important role in Brownsville’s steady economic growth, with vast tracts of land dedicated to farming and ranching. The Port of Brownsville, a first-class cargo and fishing port, facilitates the international movement of goods between the U.S. and Mexico and provides vital services to the multimillion dollar shrimping industry.

History:
For much of its colonial history, the area that is now Brownsville changed hands several times as a result of bloody struggles for independence by both Texas and Mexico. Land on the north bank of the Rio Grande River was first colonized in 1748 under Spanish General Jose de Escandon. When Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, Brownsville came under Mexican rule as part of Matamoros, Tamaulipas. In 1835, Texas declared her independence from Mexico, resulting in a war which was ultimately won by the Texans at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Texas claimed the Rio Grande River as her western boundary, which included nearly half of the State of Tamaulipas. Disputes over the area would last throughout the nine years that Texas was an independent Republic.

Following the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas, war ensued between the United States and Mexico. Fort Taylor, a U.S. military outpost in Texas, was renamed Fort Brown in honor of Major Jacob Brown, who died while defending the stronghold against Mexican forces. At the end of the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, confirming the area where Brownsville is now located as being American territory. In 1848, a city adjacent to the fort was founded and it was named Brownsville. In 1853, Brownsville was incorporated as a city. During the Civil War, Brownsville was used as a port through which large quantities of cotton and other products were exported by the Confederate States of America. When the Civil War ended, the city set about reconstructing and maintaining law and order from 1865 to 1916. Telephone service, electricity, water and sewer systems came to the city during the early 1900s.

Tourism:.
North or south of the border, Brownsville offers a variety of attractions and recreations for people of all ages and persuasions. The semi-tropical environment and climate make Brownsville the destination of choice for many people seeking to escape the Texan winter. Humans aren’t the only ones moving to Brownsville. The seasons of fall and spring are marked by the migration of different bird species to the Rio Grand Valley. Birders and nature lovers are encouraged to visit Brownsville’s birding centers, which include the World Birding Center and the Sabal Palm Audubon Center. History buffs should not miss the Historic Brownville Museum, which is housed in a building that features Spanish colonial revival architecture. To fully appreciate the history and culture of Brownsville, visitors are encouraged cross the border and explore its sister city, Matamoros. Spend a day or two marveling at this colorful Mexican city’s wonderful museums, historic downtown, and the Cathedral De Nuestra Señora del Refugio.
