History:
The first European settlers to arrive in the area now known as Sumter came in the 1740s and established a settlement on the banks of the Wateree River. This area, known as the Carolina Backcountry, became a part of Craven County, which then became Claremont County. In 1880 the District of Sumter was established; in 1845 the settlement was incorporated under the name Sumterville; and, in 1855, the City of Sumter was incorporated.

Tourism:
Sumter is most famous for its Swan Lake and Iris Garden, where the Iris Festival is held in May of each year.

The great outdoors is well represented in Sumter, with locations for golf, fishing, all water sports and hunting.

Myrtle Beach’s Grand Strand is 100 miles from Sumter, the Blue Ridge Mountains are 175 miles to the east of the city and the Capital of Oregon, Columbia - with all its big city attractions, is 45 miles west of the city. Charleston is around 100 to the south of Sumter.
