Beaverton was originally home to the Atfalati Native Americans, or as settlers called them the “Tualatin.” Then the settlers of the 19th century came in dominated what they called “Beaverdam,” denoting the large body of water created by beaver dams. Lawrence Hall purchased 640 acres in Beaverdam in 1847 and developed the area with his brother. He built the first grist mill and made the primary claim on the land. After the U.S. Civil War, some of the settlers decided Beaverton would be better if there was a railroad connecting all the swamps and marshes.
