Edmond, Oklahoma

As the famous song went, “Get your kicks on Route 66.” Route 66 is one of several Interstate Highways leading to the city of Edmond, Oklahoma. You will soon understand why this city was listed “One of the Top 100 Places to Live in 2007” by Relocate America, when you look around. Those moving to Edmond will discover an exciting life awaits them.

History:
Edmond began as a coaling and water station for the Santa Fe Railroad when it reached the area in 1887. The early settlers stuck with the name “Edmond” (after Edmond Burdick, a traveling freight agent with Santa Fe) as the town began to develop thanks to the Oklahoma Land Run that was in full swing by the late 1880s. A new public schoolhouse, the first in Oklahoma Territory was commissioned in August 1889 and this was soon followed by the first church. As a clear indication of its rising prominence, Edmond received its first telephone system in 1902, and within 3 years the first state Fire Company. In 1905, a proud Dr O’Toole drove through town in the first automobile to arrive in the area. A visit to the Edmond Historical Society & Museum in the city is recommended - this fine institution has excellent exhibits, and the visitor can pick up on the finer details there of Edmond’s development from earliest times through to the present day.

Economy:
Edmond has several major employers – see below – and also has a number of attractive smaller and medium enterprises such as technology firms, service companies and manufacturers.

Tourism:
The city of Edmond is one of the scenic stops on Route 66, and when you arrive in town you will be impressed with the order and neatness of this place. Tree-lined streets and bronze statues welcome you as you drive into its historic downtown center. You will find fine restaurants, unique boutiques and fascinating shops all waiting to entice you. Add in the very collectable antiques on offer and the outdoor music festivals held in the amphitheatre park, and your memories of this city will be cherished long after your visit. While you are there, check out some of the trails of Edmond aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle while showing off abundant beauty donated by nature and free to all. There are several trails to follow so happy rambling! Beautiful Arcadia Lake is also well worth a visit with more than 26-miles of shoreline and plenty of outdoor activities on offer too.

Colleges and Universities:
