Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). Youngstown, Ohio

Youngstown, Ohio is named after John Young, who first surveyed the area in the late 1700s. Today, this exciting moving destination is home to several metal works and auto supplier industries. Youngstown has gone from boom steel town, to a down and out city that is now half the size in population that it was in during its heights of glamour, to a town with a bright and bold future. The downtown area that once drew crowds to theaters and shopping is now being revamped with new construction. Youngstown is making gallant attempts to shed its image as a "rust belt" city and today it is well on its way at becoming a vivacious city with pride showing in all parts of the community.

History:
The city of Youngstown was incorporated in 1867. Mr. Young purchased about 15,000 acres from the United States Government through the Connecticut Western Reserve Land Company. By 1798, many families were settling in the Mahoning Valley. And by 1820, Youngstown's population began to grow, and industrialization, thanks in part to the opening of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. In 1877, the canal was finally closed and the property sold. The railroad and industry purchased most of this property. The first steel company was established in the Mahoning Valley, turning Youngstown industry from iron to steel, which was the predecessor of miles of steel plants in the valley. Youngstown is also known for its devotion to the arts. In 1975, the Youngstown Area Arts Council was established to sustain all visual and performing arts in the city. Also in the downtown area is Edward W. Powers Auditorium, which was opened in 1931 by the Warner Brothers, one of the originators of the motion picture industry.

Economy:
Gifted with large deposits of coal and iron as well as "old growth" hardwood forests needed to produce charcoal, the city of Youngstown eventually developed a booming steel industry. In time, the availability of fossil fuels contributed to the expansion of other coal-fired mills, including the Youngstown Rolling Mill Company, which was established in mid-1800. By the mid-19th century, Youngstown was the home of a number of iron industrial plants. The iron industry continued to expand in the 1890s, in spite of the depletion of local natural resources. Numerous rail connections ensured a consistent supply of coal and iron ore from neighboring states. At the turn of the century, local industrialists started converting to steel manufacturing, accompanied by a wave of industrial consolidations that placed much of the Mahoning Valley's industry in the hands of national corporations. The 1969 corporate merger between the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company and the New Orleans-based Lykes Corporation proved a turning point in the end of the local steel industry.

Tourism:
Youngstown has hundreds of things to see and do. With its 11 museums, numerous spas and movie theaters, travelers and residents can enjoy a whole golf courses, a handful of charming stores, a children’s museum and more Mill Creek Park. The Mill Creek Metropolitan Park District conserves open spaces within the urbanized Mahoning Valley. Mill Creek Park covers more than 2,500 acres and includes 21 miles of scenic drives, over 15 miles of foot trails, and a rare collection of gardens, lakes, streams, woodlands, meadows and wildlife for all to enjoy. Residents and visitors will find a wide range of recreational opportunities including hiking, picnicking, boating, biking, golf, tennis and sand volleyball. Next, sample some of the amazing local eateries in downtown Youngstown. Working hard to break the steel city rust belt image, the city’s downtown area is becoming lively and has some restaurants and the stimulating Convo Center.
