Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Schenectady, New York

Schenectady is centrally located between Boston, Niagara Falls, New York City and Montreal. The city is home to a wealth of historical landmarks, outdoor activities, cultural attractions, exciting entertainment venues and fine dining opportunities. A city with a little bit of everything, Those moving to Schenectady will discover an ideal place for families, singles or those looking for an exciting new location.

History:
In 1765, Schenectady was incorporated as a borough. It was chartered as a city in 1798.
During the American Revolutionary War, the local militia unit, the Second Albany County Militia Regiment, was active during the Battle of Saratoga and in fights against Loyalist troops.

Union College was founded here in 1795. In 1887, Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works to Schenectady. In 1892, Schenectady became the headquarters of the General Electric Company. Schenectady is home to WGY-AM, one of the first commercial radio stations in the country. The station was named after its owner, General Electric (the G), and the city of Schenectady (the Y). General Electric also generated the first regular television broadcasts in the United States in 1928. The city was once known as "The City that Lights and Hauls the World"--a dual reference to two prominent businesses located in the city, the Edison Electric Company and the American Locomotive Company. GE has retained its administrative core in Schenectady, but many of the manufacturing jobs have been relocated to the Sun Belt and abroad. ALCO's operations slowly fizzled out as the company went through a series of acquisitions and restructuring in the late 1960s. In the early 21st century, the city is experiencing difficult financial times, as are many upstate New York cities. The profound loss of employment opportunities has led to Schenectady's population decline by nearly a third since 1950.

Economy:
State and local governments employ nearly a quarter of the area’s workforce, a phenomenon that has brought long-term stability to the economy. A network of service industries, especially restaurants and food stores, law firms and related businesses, has grown up in the area to serve the needs of government. Technology has been targeted as a prime growth industry for the area. The area is also home to a number of manufacturers, producing such items as felt products, sporting goods, and beer, but national companies represent major manufacturing with divisions located throughout the area. The sectors of finance, insurance, and real estate enjoy a strong presence throughout the area, which is one of the nation's largest banking cities. As the focal point of a six-county greater metropolitan area that encompasses prime East Coast recreational areas, the tourists who flock to the region each year also affect the area economically.

Tourism:
Stat at the Proctors Theater. There you will experience spectacular Broadway productions in one of the finest restored vaudeville theaters in the country. Next, Freedom Park is the place to relax and enjoy the sounds of jazz, a symphony or blues band during their free concert series. The people of Schenectady made pioneering contributions to power generation and distribution, radio and television technology, medical diagnostic imaging and many other technological innovations that changed the world during the 20th century. Experience the history of the city’s innovations at the Schenectady Museum. Finally, the Empire State Air Museum offers something for all flight enthusiasts, from educational program to exhibits to well-known and rare aircrafts.
