The neighborhood of Woodside is in the west of the Borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered by Astoria in the north, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst and in the east, Maspeth in the south and Sunnyside in the west. Those moving to Woodside will discover a  residential neighborhood within a great community.

History:
The original inhabitants of the area known today as Woodside were the Lenape Native American tribe who were forced out of the area by Dutch colonialists after wars in 1640 and 1655, thus making the region one of the very first to be settled by Europeans. Described by these settlers as being “an isolated area of snake infested swamps and wolf inhabited woods”, it is not surprising that there was no discernible development until the 1860s when development of a residential area began with the influx of Irish immigrants. At the beginning of the 1930s the population of West Queens, the neighborhood today known as Woodside, was 80 percent Irish.

Tourism:
Tourists primarily come to Woodside to enjoy the culture and cuisine of the various nationalities residing in the area. There is a Chinatown, a Koreatown and a Little Manila, as well as many Thai eateries. Try some of the numerous Irish restaurants and pubs too.

Interesting Fact:

• Woodside was home to some famous people, namely the movie director Francis Ford Coppola, the Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt and the International Chess Grand Master Edmar Mednis.
