Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Brooklyn, New York

In 1898, Brooklyn officially became part of New York City. Although Brooklyn, New York is actually located on Long Island, it is not considered to be an official part of Long Island. Today, you can find a rental in a neighborhood that is perfect for you no matter what suits your fancy-lofts, warehouses, brownstones, apartments and condos are all in Brooklyn. There are also a myriad of people from all different walks of life and all types of culture and cuisine to suit whatever your taste may be. Brooklyn is also known as “the borough of homes and churches.” It’s no wonder that Brooklyn is one of the most popular moving destinations in NYC.

Economy:
Much of Brooklyn’s economy is derived from the health (or lack thereof) of Manhattan’s economy. The service industry is currently the largest industry in Brooklyn, but the healthcare sector is rapidly increasing as well. As the national economy slowly makes a turn for the better, Brooklyn continues to see a decrease in the city’s unemployment rates; however the average salary for many of Brooklyn’s residents is on the upswing.  The population is growing and changing too as many more young professionals and new families move into the area.

Tourism:
One of the most famous landmarks is the Brooklyn Bridge. It was the first wire suspension bridge ever built. One incredible site to behold is the Brooklyn Bridge at night because the lights that shine on it showcase its true beauty. Another well-known historic site is the Greenwood cemetery first discovered in 1838. In 1776, the Battle of Long Island was fought here. The grounds of the cemetery are so pretty that by 1860 the cemetery was an extremely popular tourist stop. Greenwood even served as an inspiration for New York parks, including Central Park.

History:
In 1646 Brooklyn or “Breuckelen” was founded and settled by the Dutch. By the 1680’s the original settlers, the Lenape Native American Indians, lost their rights to the land.  By 1698 the population of Breuckelen was 2,017. This is quite a stark contrast to the more than 2.5 million people who live in Brooklyn today. In 1771, nearly one third of the population was African slaves.  Slavery became illegal in the state of New York in 1827.  Also, the start of the 19th century saw the opening of a shipyard and the start of Robert Fulton’s ferry service to allow for mass commuting by wealthy businessmen.  In 1825 the Erie Canal allowed for even more industrial expansion. In the 1840’s, the first band of European immigrants came to Brooklyn and by 1860 it was the third most populated city in the US. The population reached more than one million by the end of the century. Now, moving companies in Brooklyn transport people here from all over the country and the world, making this borough one of the most popular destinations in New York City.
