Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. Poughkeepsie, New York

Poughkeepsie, New York, located in the County Seat of Dutchess County, is part of the Newburgh–Middletown metropolitan area. Geographically, the city lies in an area of natural beauty on the banks of the Hudson River in the Hudson River Valley, between Albany and New York City. According to statistics released by the United States Census Board, Poughkeepsie has a total land area of just over five square miles where 5,747 residents live per square mile, thus the city is rated as being of average population density. The population of Poughkeepsie was 29,564, according to statistics released in mid 2009.

The Bronx is the nearest large city, just over 59 miles distant. Nearby towns and cities include Arlington, Highland, Fairview, Milton, Lloyd, Spackenkill, Red Oaks, Crown Heights and Danbury.

St Francis Hospital, Vassar Brothers Hospital and Hudson River Psychiatric Center, serve the community’s health needs.

John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia Airport, Albany International Airport and Stewart International Airport provide international air connections, while Dutchess County Airport and Sherman Field Airport provide regional connections. There is an Amtrak station in the city.

The Cost of Living Index for Poughkeepsie as at January 2011 was listed as 139.5 points, considerably higher than the national average for the United States of 100 points. Unemployment numbers released in December 2010 were Poughkeepsie 9.3 percent, while the State of New York average was 8 percent.

IBM is the most prominent employer in Poughkeepsie where its facility is geared towards the design and manufacture of power servers and mainframes, as well being a software development center for certain of its products.

History:
The history of Poughkeepsie goes back to the middle of the 17th century when Dutch immigrants arrived in the area and formed a settlement. The first recorded home was built in 1702. After the American Revolution, Poughkeepsie became a second capital city of New York.

Poughkeepsie was incorporated as a village in 1799 and only in 1854 was it chartered as a city.

Tourism:
Poughkeepsie is in an area of natural beauty which attracted many of the rich and famous in years gone by and their mansions can still be seen today. The city is now a National Heritage Area.

The Bardavon 1869 Opera House has been in operation continuously since it opened and today is a stage for opera, dance, movie, music and drama productions, as well as being home to the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.
