City Moving

Lincoln, Nebraska

From 19th-century salt miners to German immigrants to Johnny Carson, all those moving to Lincoln, Nebraska have found a home. This capitol city – the state’s second-largest urban area – grew as an agricultural center to become the government, education and business center for southern Nebraska. Known by many as the home of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, the city also has cultural attractions, historic sites and an extensive park system. The city is also an excellent choice to relocate to and one that has great school systems and affordable housing. As your moving company loads up your belongings, you can be sure that you are on your way to an exciting new home in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Economy:
Lincoln began as a salt-mining area and agricultural center. While the agricultural lands surrounding the city remain strong, most modern residents of Lincoln work in industries such as government, education, medicine and banking. Lincoln is the capitol of Nebraska and is the site of the Nebraskan state legislature and many state government offices. The two biggest employers in the city are the government and the University of Nebraska, with medical facilities like the BryanLGH Medical Center and insurance companies like Liberty Benefit Life also employing many in the area.

Tourism:
As the capitol city, Lincoln is an important tourist destination within the state and region. The Nebraska State Capitol building (built between 1922 and 1932 and still Lincoln’s tallest structure) and the University of Nebraska State Museum are the city’s two most-visited destinations. Other historical sites include the Germans from Russia Museum, Fairview House (the home of William Jennings Bryan) and the Thomas P. Kennard house (Lincoln’s oldest residence, built in 1869). The Haymarket area, once a farming-supply market, offers antique shops, art galleries and night life. Visitors from all over the state flock to Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium during football season to watch the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. When full (which happens for virtually every game), the 81,000-seat stadium becomes Nebraska’s third-largest “city.” You can reach Lincoln by air via the Lincoln Municipal Airport or by train at Amtrak’s Lincoln Station. The Star Tran bus company provides transportation throughout the city.

History:
Originally called Lancaster, the city was founded in a salt marsh area in 1859. The original inhabitants thought to build a salt-mining center, but agriculture soon became the major draw for immigrants. The city received the name of Lincoln in 1867, when it was chosen to be the capitol of the new state of Nebraska. Despite the pro-Confederacy sentiments of some in the area, the city prospered under its new name. The late 19th century saw a swell in population due to foreign immigration, mainly made up of ethnic Germans emigrating from Russia. By 1914, a full one-third of Lincoln’s population consisted of German immigrants and their descendents. Lincoln grew slowly (by about one percent per year) throughout the 20th century, as more and more people were moving to Lincoln due to its growth as a suburban town. Today, these formerly-independent towns make up the many neighborhoods of Lincoln.
