Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Lafayette, Louisiana

Lafayette is a thriving metropolis in Louisiana. It is the fourth largest city in the state and is one of the main economic hubs in the area. The population of the city is over 112,000 and residents have a mixed culture of French, Spanish, Indian and African. The Cajun and Creole heritage is also still very much alive in the area which creates a unique day to day experience in the community. All these economic and cultural attractions keep Lafayette moving companies busy all year round.

Economy:
Lafayette is one of the central business hubs of Louisiana. There are many opportunities for businesses that are moving to Lafayette, a well-trained workforce being only one of them. Local infrastructure is also well developed and the city does its best to provide its investors the best value for their money. The city is also conveniently located in a crossroad between states resulting in a vibrant transportation industry. The fuel industry was traditionally the most influential market in the area but in the recent years the city has diversified its economy. Its current major industries are construction, retail trade, finance, manufacturing and information technology.

History:
The earliest recorded inhabitants of the region where Lafayette is now located are American Indians. The most prominent tribe during that time was the Attakapas. They reined over the area until three opposing tribes joined forces to defeat them. There were no European organized settlements yet at the time but there have been signs of independent trappers and ranchers making their way into the area.

In the 1800s, Acadians migrated to the area from French Canada. When Spain arrived and colonized the area, the Acadians refused to leave. This led to the forced expulsion of the Acadian residents. A lot of Acadians were shipped off to different places and families were broken up.  Spain eventually agreed to let them stay in the southern part of Louisiana. Several decades later and after the region had transferred from France to Spain to America, the population of the area grew as more and more people decided to move there.

In 1821, land was donated for the construction of a parish in the new Acadian community by Jean Mutton. A small settlement grew around the parish which eventually became the town of Vermillion. The town was renamed in 1884 to Lafayette in honor of Marquis de Lafayette.

Tourism:
Lafayette is famous the world over for its Cajun and Creole cuisine. Food lovers will definitely enjoy a visit to the many first class restaurants in the area. Another must-see area for visitors is Vermillionville which has old style houses and recreated vintage buildings. It’s a nice place to bring the family for a quick tour of an 18th century town. Other things that might interest tourists are visits to the Lafayette Parish, a Louisiana swamp tour and an Avery Island Tour.
