Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Stamford, Connecticut

If you’re trying to decide between the bustle of a big city and the security of a small town, moving to Stamford, Connecticut may be the right choice for you. Although it is located just 25 miles from New York City, Stamford is still comparatively small in population, with only about 120,000 inhabitants. Its residents call it a “little-big city” for the cosmopolitan atmosphere of its downtown, because despite its small size, Stamford is a thriving center for the arts.

What else keeps Stamford moving companies so busy? CNN Money regularly rates the city as one of the Top 100 best places to live in the United States. Many people are relocating to Stamford for its low crime and relatively mild climate, as well as its proximity to the financial center of New York.

Economy:
Stamford is located on Interstate 95, and it also has a stop on the Metro North Railway line. Many of its residents use these convenient thoroughfares to commute south to New York City, but Stamford is more than just a commuters’ town. It is also the largest business center in Connecticut.

In 1997, the New York Times reported that the city of Stamford was experiencing a renaissance. Its formerly business parks were being filled in by small companies such as boutique investment bankers, software developers and venture capitalists. The city continued to draw business investment, and soon several nationally-known companies were moving to Stamford. Major employers in the area include the Royal Bank of Scotland, UBS and Virgin Atlantic.

The new corporations did not drive out small businesses. The Stamford Chamber of Commerce boasts that over 85 percent of its members are small businesses.

History:
The original inhabitants of Stamford called the area Rippowam, and several Stamford schools and landmarks have been named Rippowam in honor of the native people that once lived there. English settlers later renamed the town to Stamford, which is the same name of a town in Lincolnshire, England.

During the 17th century, the legend of Pirate Captain Kidd arose from a report by the Earl of Belmont, who accused a man named Kidd of selling stolen treasure through a Stamford merchant. The extent of Captain Kidd’s involvement remains uncertain, but no one in Stamford has found any pirate treasure so far.

The American Revolutionary War was divisive for the town of Stamford, because many of its residents were Loyalists. As it became clear that Britain would lose the way, most of the Loyalists fled to New York City, then on to Newfoundland, Canada. After the war, Stamford’s proximity to New York allowed it to become a center of manufacturing. The many immigrants coming through New York became a cheap source of labor, and the goods could easily be exported through Long Island Sound.

In the latter half of the 20th-century, Stamford’s manufacturers moved abroad in search of cheap labor, echoing a pattern seen across the U.S. In their absence, Stamford’s economy was depressed until new investment by financial firms created a renaissance in the 1990s.

Tourism:
Stamford has over 14 miles of coastline, and many tourists enjoy boating on the Long Island Sound. After a long day on the water, visitors can come ashore to eat at any of its 400+ restaurants. The town also boasts excellent shopping; most large retail chains have a presence there, and visitors will also find a wide array of local boutiques.
The Sound isn’t the only draw in Stamford. It’s also known for its downtown, which is a center for the arts. In just one season, the Stamford Center of the Arts coordinated with the Palace Theater to host over 500 cultural events, including symphonies, operatic performances and ballet recitals. The Avon Theater, a non-profit art house cinema, is also an important part of the community. Its strikingly beautiful façade hints at the whimsical and eclectic collection of films that movie buffs can enjoy in its renovated auditorium.

Colleges/Universities:
