History:
Longmont was established in 1870 by a group of notable Chicago citizens who sold memberships for a new town. The town was known as the Chicago-Colorado Community. The revenue from the sale of these memberships was used to purchase a large area in Northern Colorado. Construction for the town started in 1871. The name was taken from the nearby Longs Peak which was named in honour of the explorer Stephen H. Long. Water for the town was arranged by constructing an extensive irrigation ditch system which brought water from the nearby rivers to the wheat fields and other farm land. A number of mills sprung up and a well-known Great Western Sugar Co. was established.

During World War II, a number of detained Japanese-Americans were relocated to the region and worked in the sugar beet fields. They took up residence in the area when the war ended and now consist of a significant portion of the community. By the 1980s, other industries had become very active in the area and the agriculture business soon closed down.

Tourism:
Longmont as a lot to offer to both residents and visitors. The Historic Downtown area is worth seeing. The Callahan House is a famous Victorian style home and is famous among tourists. Longmont also has a number of parks and a range of outdoor activities. Hiking trails, Horse-riding, bicycle tracks and lively campgrounds all add more to the already interesting city.
