Hayward, California

Home to a diverse population of 141,000, Hayward, California is a suburb of Oakland and the sixth-largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area. People are moving to Hayward because of its central and convenient location, which provides easy access points to anywhere in the Bay Area. Other major draws for people thinking of moving to Hayward are the city’s affordable housing, cultural diversity, economic vitality and proximity to prestigious institutions of higher learning.

Economy:
The main industry in Hayward is manufacturing, followed closely by education, social services and health care. The manufacturing industry provides employment for 16 percent of the total workforce. For many years, Hunt-Wesson was the largest employer in the city, where it maintained the bulk of its canning and food processing facilities. The loss of the Hunt-Wesson canneries was absorbed by the burgeoning industries of housing, construction, manufacture, utilities, communications and financial services. The city government has developed a plan aimed at attracting investment, increasing the tax base, create employment opportunities for residents and newcomers moving to Hayward, and generate public revenues.

History:
In 1843, Guillermo Castro received a land grant from Mexican Governor Michaeltoreño as a reward for his past military and civil service. The land, called “El Rancho San Lorenzo,” was 27,000 acres of flatlands, hills and canyons now known as Hayward and Castro Valley. In 1851, William Hayward came to San Lorenzo after failing in his bid to strike it rich from the Gold Rush. Hayward bought 40 acres of Don Castro’s land spanning what is known the downtown Hayward area. There he opened a general store, stagecoach shop, post office, dairy farm and hotel. The commercial area flourished and soon came to be known as “Hayward’s Place.” On September 18, 1928 the community was officially called the City of Hayward.

The arrival of rail service in the 1865 drew hundreds of immigrants to area. Agriculture and tourism helped boost Hayward’s growth through the late-19th century. More settlers started moving to Hayward as rail service expanded and after the construction of the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge in 1929. During and after World War II, Hayward experienced steady economic and population growth due to the presence of factories manufacturing war materials and the Hunt Brothers Cannery’s substantial investments in the area.  By the mid-1960s, much of Hayward apricot trees and canneries had disappeared to give way to subdivisions and shopping centers.

Tourism:
With its scenic mountain views, a spectacular California climate and convenient location, Hayward is the best place to enjoy the cosmopolitan pleasures of San Francisco and the cultural melting pot of the East Bay. A popular destination among locals is the Don Castro Regional Park, a 101-acre natural reserve which features a swim lagoon, hiking and fishing. The Hayward Area Historical Society Museum is where you can learn about the history of the city, starting from the pre-settlement Indians, followed by the Spanish missions, the time of the Gold Rush and the Hunt-Wesson Company. If you are moving to Hayward with your family, the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is just the place to bring the kids.  The center features aquariums, an interactive computer exhibit on the Bay, and an elevated observation platform that gives a good view of the surrounding marshlands. For culture and entertainment, head to the greater San Francisco Bay Area where you can find some of the world’s finest art museums, theater companies, urban parks and shopping districts.
