Capital City: Topeka a city of the state of Kansas in Shawnee County is home to about 122,600 people. Topeka was once home to the Kansa and Ioway Native Americans. "Topeka" means "to dig up good potatoes." The city is located in the northeast of Kansas. It has a total area of 57 square miles. In 2007, Forbes Magazine named Topeka one of the leading U.S. cities that have the biggest variations in temperature, precipitation, and wind. Summers in Topeka are very hot and winters can be warm and cold at any given time.

Population: There are over 2,700,000 people that reside in Kansas.

Local Activities: In Kansas, there are numerous soccer, baseball, football, ice hockey facilities as well as auto racing tracks that are very popular in the state. While visiting Kansas, you can also visit the home of author William Allen White, visit the Maras des Cygnes Massacre Site and ride along the Hollenberg Pony Express.

Economy: The top employers of the state of Kansas are Sprint Nextel, Cessna, Spirit AeroSystems, Hawker Beechcraft and other companies in engineering, aviation, insurance and technology. Kansas has always been a very successful agricultural state with goods like cattle, sheep, wheat, soybeans, cotton and more. Eastern Kansas is a part of the Grain Belt, which is an area of major grain production. Other state exports that reign in the top of Kansas's list are oil and natural gas resources.

  • Kansas has the largest population of wild grouse - commonly known as prairie chicken-in North America.

  • A ball of twine in Cawker City, Kansas that was started by Farmer Frank Stoeber in 1953 on his farm, now measures a circumference of over 40 feet and over 16,750 pounds. It's one of the greatest tourist attractions for people visiting for passing through Kansas.

  • Amelia Earhart, first woman granted a pilot's license by the National Aeronautics Associate was also the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, was from Atchison, Kansas.

The actress Kirstie Alley is from Wichita and the actress Annette Bening is from Topeka. The jazz musician Charlie Parker and the politician Bob Dole are also from Kansas.
