Nichols HouseThe earliest written work on the subject of architecture is ...De architectura, by the Roman architect Vitruvius. According to Vitruvius, a good building should satisfy the three principles of firmitatis utilitatis venustatis. This translates to Durability, Utility and Beauty.Taking these principles into account, noted designer and architect John Maienza has transformed a 50's style traditional into a 21st century Modern that surpasses expectation and redefines luxury. One of Maienza's early influences is architect Mies Van der Rohe whose style was defined by minimal framework of structural order, balanced against the implied freedom of free-flowing open space. Industrial steel and plate glass defined his interior spaces with clarity and simplicity. Maienza has taken his influence and breathed life into Nichols House. Comprehensive in every detail, he incorporates state of the art technology in an elegantly unobtrusive manner. In a dramatic and utilitarian design, the open layout of the main level is a champion of light, volume and space. Using skylights and windows, daylight is distributed to every corner making the home beam with cheery intensity. The living room features floor to ceiling windows with canyon and city lights views, a circular two-way fireplace with granite hearth, motorized shades, and spacious balcony. The kitchen boasts state of the art Miele appliances including oven, cook-top, coffee maker, steam oven and dishwasher. There is also a Sub-zero refrigerator and wine cabinet. Custom Douglas Fir cabinetry and 'Absolute Black' honed granite, adorn an oval shaped cooking station with sit-up bar.The upper level features one of two master suites. Overlooking the serene canyon views, this suite has specially appointed elements that will bestow luxury upon your guests. Surround sound, private balcony, gas fireplace, Artemide pendant reading lights and walk-in closet with safe and alarm. The bathroom spares no expense with heated floors, shower & spa tub wet room, Duravit Bacino dual sinks, and under-counter night lighting. To get to the lower level of the home, a specially designed two-story glass floating stair tower is functional, as well as an art piece. The downstairs living area features Xilo tile flooring which is latest example of modern ceramic technology, imitating the strains of exotic wood. The media room has full surround sound, back-lit TV, wet bar with Sub-zero refrigerator/ice-maker, and an art display with Italian pendent lighting. This level also contains a guest bedroom, full bath and a gym.The lower master suite drenches the senses in full indulgence. A grand gallery entry leads you to private and secluded sleeping quarters with a private balcony, breathtaking views, gas fireplace, Italian lighting, motorized shades, HD TV with surround sound, and bedside alarm. The master bath incorporates a dual-flip design Duravit Bacino sink center that utilizes space while allowing room to spread your wings. Imported Venetian glass floor to ceiling tiles sport river rock accents. Enjoy double-headed steam shower or Jacuzzi tub with waterfall spout. Heated floors, lighted mirrors, and under cabinet accent lights finish the room in glorious splendor. The outside entertaining space is accented by Brazilian IPE decking, outdoor speakers and a dazzling fire sculpture. The salt-water pool includes a full-length seating area over-looking the views, and Laminar Jet fountains with pulse lighting. A three-tiered grassy area provides plenty of space to peruse the garden or bask in the sun.Nichols House is one of the rare opportunities that combines art and living space in one conveniently wrapped package. As birds and bees built their nests, so humans constructed housing from natural materials, that gave them shelter against the elements. Using 1st century principles and a 21st century sensibility, modern living has been raised to a new standard of excellence.

Once you have narrowed it down to a specific neighborhood or community, check online for local listing agents. For those looking for an apartment or condominium, many realtors in Los Angeles offer residential renter’s information as well as information about the area. For those looking to buy their first home, Los Angeles is a superb place to call home and the ideal place to invest in your future.

History:
The Southern Pacific Railroad reached Los Angeles, California in 1876, followed by the Santa Fe Railroad nine years later. The two rival companies conducted a rate war that eventually drove the price of a ticket from the eastern United States down to five dollars. This price slashing brought thousands of settlers to the area, sending real estate prices to unrealistically high levels. By 1890, the population had climbed back up to 50,000 residents. In the 1890s, oil was discovered in the city, and soon another boom took hold. By the turn of the century, almost fifteen hundred oil wells operated throughout Los Angeles. In the early 1900s, agriculture became an important part of the economy, and a massive aqueduct project was completed. The motion picture industry thrived on the Los Angeles area's advantages after the first decade of the 20th century, and by 1930, it had earned the city the nickname of “Tinseltown.” The Depression and the Midwestern drought of the 1930s brought thousands of people to California looking for jobs. By the 1950s, Los Angeles was a sprawling metropolis. Los Angeles emerged from the recession of the mid-1990s, but like much of the country, the city was dealt another blow after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In response to the ensuing economic downturn, the mayor created the Los Angeles Economic Impact Task Force, which brought together business leaders from across the city to develop recommendations for strengthening the local economy. The result has been an increase in tourism, retail sales and other continuing signs of recovery.

Economy:
Los Angeles is the largest major manufacturing center in the U.S. The largest components are apparel, computer and electronic products, transportation products, fabricated metal products, food products and furniture. The last few years have witnessed major economic expansion. Los Angeles is also a major producer of furniture and fixtures, as well as petroleum products and chemicals, print material, rubber goods, pottery, ceramics and cement products. Los Angeles is the nation's largest port in terms of value of goods handled and tonnage. The banking and finance industry in Los Angeles is one of the largest in the United States. More than 100 foreign and countless domestic banks operate branches in Los Angeles, along with many financial law firms and investment banks. Entertainment, in the form of film, television, and music production, is the best-known industry in Los Angeles, focusing worldwide attention on the city and making Los Angeles a major tourist destination. Tourism employs more than 468,000 people in the entire metropolitan area. Other prominent industries in the Los Angeles area include health services, education, high-technology research and development, professional fields such as architecture and engineering, and a large construction business, both commercial and residential. Services, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, government, financial service industries, transportation, utilities and construction contribute significantly to local employment.

Tourism:
What better place to start than at one of the country’s premier attractions. Head over to Disneyland and see for yourself why they call it "the happiest place on earth.” Spend the day ridding roller coasters, watching shows and enjoying the humongous park. Of course, keep your eyes peels for Mickey and his friends. Next, head to celebrate Hollywood Boulevard where you can enjoy the Walk of Fame, famous theaters as well as some unique shopping opportunities. For a taste of the arts, head over to the Autry Museum of Western Heritage. The Autry is a museum and cultural center that celebrates the history and diversity of the American West. There you will see historical and contemporary exhibits, participate in engaging lectures and workshops and enjoy a wonderful view. Then, head over to Petersen Automotive Museum.Named for Robert Peterson, publisher of Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazines, this salute to the car industry takes you back through history and into the future with over 200 innovative and interactive exhibits of cars and motorcycles. When the sun goes down, Los Angeles comes alive. Home to some of the country’s finest nightlife venues, the city is buzzing with nightclubs, sports bars, lounges, restaurants and more.
