History: The city of Houston was incorporated in 1837. In that year, the city also became the seat of Harrisburg County, as well as the temporary capital of the new Republic of Texas. The city’s first prominent industry was cotton, which would later lead to the city's emergence as a commercial and railroad focal point by the mid-1800s. Oil was discovery in Houston in and early 1900 marked the beginning of the petroleum industry’s presence in the area. Of course, aerospace has been a major economic, cultural and historic part of Houston since 1961, when the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center first opened its doors. Today, the city has earned its nickname: "Space City." Houston is a flourishing metropolis of commerce, second only to New York City in Fortune 500 headquarters. The Astrodome, the world's first indoor domed sports stadium, opened in 1965, and was nicknamed “the Eighth Wonder of the World.” Later, in 1982, the JP Morgan Chase Tower would be completed, and stands today as the tallest structure in Texas.

Over more than a quarter century of space exploration, Houston has played the key role in the country’s space discovery. And the JohnsonSpaceCenter of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the focal point of the county’s manned space flight program. Opening its doors in 1962, the 1,620-acre Johnson complex is an international hub of technological development, employing more than 17,000 scientists, engineers and administrative personnel. The City of Houston also plays home to several major energy firms, including oil field service, exploration, production as well as development.

The large complex offers visitors a variety of restaurant and entertainment options, all located in one beautiful facility. Next, visit the Johnson Space Center located in the Clear Lake area. Space Center Houston, NASA's official visitors’ center, features spacecraft used during space exploration and a walk-in space exhibits through state-of-the-art simulators.
