History: In 1846, the town was laid out and was named Dallas in honor of Vice President George Dallas. Dallas County was formed the same year, and was incorporated as a city in 1856. In November 1963, Dallas became the site of one of the greatest tragedies in American history as shots were fired on the Presidential motorcade, killing President John F. Kennedy and injuring Texas Governor John Connally. At the end of the 21^st century, the city continued to thrive with a healthy and diversified economy and ranked high in the nation in convention activity, as an insurance and oil industry center, in concentration of corporate headquarters, in manufacturing, and in electronics and other high-technology industries. The Dallas Metropolitan Statistical Area continues to enjoy steady growth. One of the nation's leading commercial, financial and distribution centers, the city of Dallas today is home to more than 1.2 million residents.

According to the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce, the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex holds about 43 percent of the state's high-tech workers. Then, it is off to the Dallas World Aquarium. A 22,000-gallon tunnel with a panoramic view of underwater reef life is the showpiece of this popular aquarium. Next, relax at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Sixty-six acres of peaceful woods and beautifully manicured lawns and flowers, this is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Finally, the Dallas Zoo is the largest and longest established zoo in the Southwest. The Dallas Zoo is taking big steps towards becoming one of the finest zoos in the country.
