Early growth was slow, but the arrival of the railroad in 1872 linked Dallas with the rest of the country, creating economic opportunities that drew settlers to the area. The 20th Century was a time of large growth in Dallas. Initially, agricultural trade dominated the economy. Finance became a major player in the city's economy in 1914 when Dallas was chosen as the site for one of the 12 regional U.S. Federal Reserve Banks. During the 1920s, the commercial aviation industry developed when the city purchased World War I training field, Love Field. In 1930, the East Texas Oil Field was discovered east of Dallas. In November 1963, Dallas became the site of one of the greatest tragedies in American history as shots were fired on the Presidential motorcade, killing President John F. Kennedy and injuring Texas Governor John Connally. At the end of the 21st century, the city continued to thrive with a healthy and diversified economy and ranked high in the nation in convention activity, as an insurance and oil industry center, in concentration of corporate headquarters, in manufacturing, and in electronics and other high-technology industries.
