Apartments and Rentals in Texas
Geographically, Texas is one of the largest states in the Union, so you have a wide range of territory to choose from when you’re searching for apartments in Texas. Start by looking for homes for rent in Houston or Dallas/Fort Worth. These two metropolises are the powerhouses of the Texas economy; the oil barons call Houston their home, while the cattle barons gravitate toward Dallas. This means that in addition to finding a variety of nice apartments in these cities, you’re likely to find employment as well.

Despite what Texans will tell you, not everything is big in Texas. The cost of living is small, and so are the taxes and the regulations on businesses. The climate is also pleasant in many parts of Texas, particularly along the GulfCoast. Finding good roommates in Texas should also be easy, because Texans are proud of their easy-going nature and generous hospitality.

In other words, there’s plenty to love about the “Republic of Texas,” as it’s often called by its loyal residents. Keep reading to learn more about “The Lone Star State.”

Origin of State’s Name: The name “Texas” probably came from a Native American word meaning “friends” or “allies.”

Capital City: The capital of Texas is Austin. The city is located in a bend of the Colorado River which was formerly the home of Lipan Apache, Tonkawa and Comanche Indians. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Spanish missionaries who set up temporary missions. The first permanent European settlers arrived in the 1830s, and they named their new town Waterloo. Waterloo was designated as the Republic of Texas’s capital in 1839. At that time, it was renamed in honor of Stephen F. Austin, who founded the first successful settlements in Texas in 1825.

Population: As of 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the population of Texas exceeded 24.7 million residents.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the website of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Agriculture and Industry: Texas is popularly associated with the cattle herds and oil wells that are the foundations of its wealth. Other important products of the Texas economy include cotton, dairy products, poultry and eggs, wheat and sorghum. But Texas isn’t all farms, ranches and oil fields. Its economy has become increasingly sophisticated, with many Texan companies specializing in information technology, oil refinement, food processing and manufacturing. Like so many other things in Texas, this state’s economy is large; it also encompasses tourism, fishing, movie-making and military bases.

State Bird: The Texas state bird is the Mockingbird, which is known for imitating the sounds around it, whether it’s the call of another bird or the bark of a neighborhood dog.

State Tree: The state tree is the pecan, which is known for the sweet savor of its nuts. Pecans are also known as excellent shade trees.

State Flower: The Texas state flower is the bluebonnet, particularly the lupinus texensis variety.

State Song: The state song is “Texas, Our Texas.” It was written by William J. Marsh and Gladys Yoakum Wright.

Most Popular Cities: Texas – Interesting Facts:
  • Texas boasts the largest capitol building of any of the states.
  • Texas law prohibits decorating someone else’s cow with graffiti, and it also prohibits milking someone else’s cow without their permission. Stealing a cow is still a “hanging offense.”
  • From 1836 to 1845, Texas was an independent Republic.
  • Six different flags have flown over Texas: the flags of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the ConfederateStates of America and the United States of America.
  • The oldest tree in Texas is located near the town of Fulton. Its age is estimated at 1,500 years.
Texas – Famous People:
Many famous people have called the LoneStarState their home, including Davy Crockett, Carol Burnett, President Lyndon Johnson, President George H. W. Bush, President George W. Bush, Joan Crawford, Walter Cronkite, Sam Houston, Janis Joplin, Scott Joplin, the band members of ZZ Top, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Dan Rather, Ross Perot, Karl Rove, Bob Wills and Congressman Ron Paul.
