Apartments and Rentals in Las Vegas, Nevada
Of course it is the lure of the tables and the flashing lights of the gaming machines that many say create the charm and magnetic appeal of this neon-City, but in fact tourism is the number one employer in Las Vegas and in most of Nevada too. Tourism goes on despite economic recession and global financing crises, and so the employment market in Las Vegas just keeps on trucking it seems. When moving to Las Vegas, be sure to work with a real estate agent to find out the options you have with real estate rentals; whether it be a rental home or apartment.

History: The first evidence of European settlers arriving in Las Vegas was around 1830 when a party of Spaniards explored the area with a view to securing water for their livestock from underground supplies. The name “Vegas” means meadows in Spanish and was probably conferred because of the lush green pastures watered by underground rivers and wells. In 1855 the area around what was to become Las Vegas was annexed by the U. S. from Mexico. Missionaries then developed the area building new churches and mission stations and forming a significant Mormon gathering that became known as the “Mormon Corridor” - an area that linked Salt Lake City and San Bernardino. However the Utah War put paid to the Mormon’s plans for the area and Las Vegas then had to await the arrival of the first railroad to re-establish itself. The City was incorporated in March, 1911. After that, Las Vegas prospered with the arrival of the railroad in the early 20th century and was often used as a stopover on the pioneer trails to the West. Las Vegas also proved a useful staging point for a number of mines in the area.

The turning point for Las Vegas came in 1931 with the introduction of legalized gambling. The commissioning of the Hoover Dam in 1935 resulted in more rapid growth of both residents and tourists in the area, but. With the arrival of casinos came the Mob to which much of the early development was ascribed. In fact it took nearly three decades for Las Vegas to clean up its act and rid itself of the mob-controlled gambling sector and replace it with well run legitimate corporations and the likes of businessman Howard Hughes. Today Las Vegas is at very least a trendy city on the tourist map if not a “must see” entertainment destination and it boasts more hotel rooms than any other city on Earth.

Economy: Tourism, gaming and conventions have been the staple diet of Las Vegas for many decades. The income generated from these sectors has for years helped develop the economy and has resulted in rapid growth of the housing sector to accommodate the many newcomers drawn in by the bright lights and promise of wealth. However with disposable income less in evidence since the onset of the latest recession, Las Vegas has suffered a reversal in developmental trends. In more recent times, City officials have made a concerted effort to guide the economy in directions other than just tourism with, for example, incentives offered to the light manufacturing sector and banking and other commercial interests. Las Vegas does indeed have a promising future now - how could it be otherwise after such a flamboyant past? “Viva Las Vegas!”

Tourism: Casinos and glamorous hotels remain the major attractions in Las Vegas but there is plenty else to do and see when you visit or move to this exciting city.

Colleges/Universities: Las Vegas – Interesting Facts:
  • The first major attraction was the El Rancho. It was built in 1941.
  • The Las Vegas Hilton Casino was the venue at which Elvis Presley performed 837 consecutive shows and they were all sold out.
  • No less than 17 of the world’s top 20 hotels are located in Las Vegas.
  • Until 1938 saddled horses could enter casinos, with their riders in attendance of course
