Apartments and Rentals in Minnesota
If you’re looking for apartments in Minnesota, the best place to start may be the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. These two cities have much to recommend them. There are many job opportunities, crime is relatively low and both cities boast of their “livability.” Minneapolis has a very urban feel to it, while its sister city of Saint Paul is often compared to European towns. Of course, not all rentals in Minnesota are located in its largest cities; there are also many apartments to be found elsewhere in the state.

In addition to being a great place to live, Minnesota is an excellent place to find one or two roommates to share your new home.

Although it renowned as a colony of Scandinavians, it is far more diverse than this reputation might imply. The diversity is not only in race and ethnicity; Minnesotans come from a wide economic spectrum as well, so you’re sure to find a few roommates in Minnesota who have a similar budget to yours.

But before you start calling potential housemates or hunting for homes for rent in Minnesota, take a moment to learn more about “The Land of a Thousand Lakes,” as it’s often called.

Origin of State’s Name: Minnesota was named after the Minnesota River. The word “Minnesota” derives from the Dakota Sioux word “mnishota,” which means “water that reflects the sky.”

Capital City: The state capital of Minnesota is Saint Paul, which was originally named Pig’s Eye. The settlement of Saint Paul was begun by the decree of the state legislature. Before the land was sold to the settlers, it was surveyed into square plots, which are still reflected in the city’s street grid. The city began as an area that covered about 280 acres, but it now encompasses nearly 36,000 acres.

Population: As of 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that Minnesota had approximately 5.2 million residents.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the website of the Minnesota Department of Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services Division (DVS).

Agriculture and Industry: The most important products of Minnesota agriculture are cattle and dairy products, corn, soybeans, wheat, hogs and turkeys. Minnesota also has a strong industrial component in its economy, particularly in the Twin Cities area. Key products of its factories include machinery, processed foods, printed materials, fabricated metal and electrical equipment.

State Bird: The state bird is the common loon, which is a waterfowl that is known for its fast, torpedo-like swimming.

State Tree: The state tree is the Norway pine, which can grow to heights of 150 feet and reach five feet in diameter.

State Flower: The “Queen’s Lady’s Slipper” is the Minnesota state flower. Its slow-growing plants can take up to 16 years to produce their first flowers.

State Song: “Hail! Minnesota,” which is the state song, was written by two university students in 1904. It was originally the anthem of the University of Minnesota.

Most Popular Cities: Minnesota – Interesting Facts:
  • Minneapolis and Saint Paul, which are the two largest cities in Minnesota, share a border. In fact, they are so closely associated that they are often called the Twin Cities.
  • In the 1960s, a small community of musicians gathered in the West Bank area of Minneapolis. Its members included several famous musicians, among them Bob Dylan and Willie Murphy. The “Minnesota Sound” that evolved from this group influenced many other well-known bands such as The Jets, Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum.
  • One of the most famous products of Minnesota culture is Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” which was inspired by Keillor’s childhood in Anoka, Minnesota.
  • Minnesota law prohibits residents from teasing skunks, letting animals live in a bakery or sleeping naked. The state also offers a ten-cent bounty for rats’ heads.
Minnesota – Famous People:
Minnesota has many famous sons and daughters, including Poet Laureate Robert Bly, novelists Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald, food mogul Joseph Campbell, oil executive J. Paul Getty, vintner Robert Mondavi, pilot Charles Lindbergh and screen stars Richard Dean Anderson, Judy Garland, Peter Graves, Jessica Lange, Winona Ryder and Terry Gilliam.
