Wherever you choose to call home, you will find diverse communities and available, affordable housing. Before you pack your boxes, here is a bit of information about Detroit, as well as helpful links to help get you acquainted with the area.

History: Detroit was incorporated as a city in 1815. The city’s early economic development was spurred by a combination of factors including the opening of the Erie Canal, the city's Great Lakes location, the increasing use of rail transport and the availability of a skilled labor force. The Detroit Anti-Slavery Society was organized in 1837 and the city was a station on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Detroit provided supplies and provisions to the Union cause. By the end of the century, Detroit had emerged as an important industrial and manufacturing center. The automotive industry brought thousands of immigrants into Detroit during the 1920s. Then, during the Great Depression, the industry was severely shaken. The rise of the union movement led to sit-down strikes in Detroit in 1937. In 1970, a group of business leaders formed Detroit Renaissance to address concerns of Detroit's future. The following year the group announced plans for construction of the RenaissanceCenter as a symbol of the new Detroit. The early years of the 21st century saw mixed results in Detroit's resurgence. While several significant development projects aided in the downtown's renovation, the neighborhoods continued to struggle due to poor city services and declining population.

Economy: Automobile manufacturing continues to be a primary force in the Detroit economy. In recent years, however, dependence on the auto industry has decreased while the services sector has increased. Still, the automobile rules, and as go auto sales, so goes the Detroit area economy. While manufacturing has globalized, virtually all of the key engineering, administrative, and testing functions of the Big Three take place in the Detroit area, employing thousands of highly-skilled and well-paid workers. There is also a budding industry growing up around firms researching hydrogen fuel cells and other non-petroleum power generating technologies that may drive the automobiles of the future. More than 75 percent of the labor force is employed in non-manufacturing jobs in such areas as research and development; accounting, law, and financial services and personnel and clerical support. Much of an anticipated rebound in the region's economy and job growth was expected to come in the high-growth regions of Oakland County, Macomb County and Washtenaw County and greater Ann Arbor.

Tourism: Start you exploration of the city by taking a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Home to one of the best art collections in the country, the Institute highlights everything from mummies to modern art and African masks in its collection of over 65,000 works. Next, check out the Motown HistoricalMuseum. Once the headquarters of Motown Records, the MotownHistoricalMuseum offers memorabilia from some of Motown’s most famous name including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and more. The Detroit Historical Museum is where you can see how a Cadillac is assembled and experience the many interesting displays dedicated to Detroit and the auto world. The Detroit Symphony is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon or evening. A beautiful 100-year-old building, the symphony offers comfortable seating and an open foyer where you can enjoy drinks. To get outside, the Belle Isle is a large urban park on Belle Isle in the middle of the DetroitRiver. The park is home to the Belle Isle Zoo. Finally, for the sports fan in the group, Comerica Park is home to the Detroit Tigers, but that’s not all. Combination theme park, ballpark and baseball museum, the facility features huge statues of tigers, a Ferris wheel, carousel and much more.
