Apartments and Rentals in Michigan
If you’re looking for apartments in Michigan, you’ll want to take the time to explore the regions that you’re thinking of settling in. Perhaps the least expensive apartments are to be found in Detroit, where entire houses sometimes sell for a dollar apiece. Unfortunately, the job market in Detroit has weakened as more manufacturing jobs have moved overseas. Apartment hunters who will be looking for employment may also want to consider other locations such as the Grand Rapids region, which is the fastest-growing population center in Michigan.

Michigan’s cultural diversity makes it a great place to find a few interesting roommates. A 2009 American Community survey found that Michigan had the largest U.S. populations of Finnish, Dutch and Macedonian residents. There are also sizable populations of people with Middle Eastern, African, German, Irish or French ancestry.

Before you begin hunting for apartments and roommates in Michigan, take a few minutes to learn more about “The Great Lake State,” as it is often called.

Origin of State’s Name: Michigan’s name was derived from the Indian words “Michi Gama” or “LargeLake.”

Capital City: The capital of Michigan is Lansing. The first settlers in the town were two brothers from Lansing, New York, who plotted a settlement in what they called Biddletown. They returned to New York and sold plots of land to New Yorkers, who soon discovered that Biddletown was located in a floodplain that was underwater for most of the year. Many of the settlers remained anyway, and they renamed their new town after their hometown in New York. The town was relatively small until the state legislature decided to move the capital to a more central place than Detroit, which was considered too close to Canada to be safe from invasion by the British.

Population: As of 2009, Michigan had a population of nearly 10 million residents.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the website of Michigan’s Secretary of State (SOS).

Agriculture and Industry: Michigan has historically led the nation in the manufacture of automobiles and auto parts, but it also produces many other goods. Important products of Michigan factories include prepared cereals, airplanes and airplane parts, hardware, furniture and refrigerators. It is also known for its forests, which are important sources of revenue for the lumber, recreation and tourism industries.

State Bird: The state bird is the American Robin, which is known for its bright red breast.

State Tree: The Michigan state tree is the white pine, which symbolizes the lumber trade that was a historic foundation for the state’s industries.

State Flower: The state flower is the apple blossom, specifically the fragrant pink blooms that adorn the apple species that were native to the state.

State Song: The official state song is called “Michigan.” Many mistakenly believe that the official song is “Michigan, My Michigan,” which has different words and a different tune.

Most Popular Cities: Michigan – Interesting Facts:
  • For many years it was believed that Michigan did not have an official state song, until historians recently unearthed a resolution by the 1937 legislature designating “My Michigan” as an official state song. The song was all but forgotten, but the Rare Book Room of the Library of Michigan still had the old sheet music.
  • Michigan has so many lakes, streams and rivers that anyone within the state’s borders is standing within six miles of a body of water.
  • With more than 3,126 miles of coastline on the Great Lakes, Michigan has the longest freshwater coastline of any state.
  • In 1837, Michigan became the 26th state to be admitted to the Union.
  • Michigan’s state motto, Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice, is a boast about its most prominent geographical feature. The motto translates to, “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you.”
  • Michigan has given rise to many celebrated rock and pop musicians, including Alice Cooper, Madonna, Kid Rock, Anthony Kiedis, Ted Nugent, Iggy Pop, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Bob Seger, Eminem and Stevie Wonder.
Michigan – Famous People
Many celebrities and historic figures have called Michigan their home, including noted critic M. F. K. Fisher, Pulitzer Prize winner Philip Levine, novelist Terry McMillan, children’s book author Chris Van Allsburg, aircraft company founder William Boeing, industrialist Henry Ford and physician John Kellogg.
