Apartments and Rentals Chicago, Illinois
The windy city – Chicago is home to just about everything in residential rental properties. From large multi-bedroom rental homes to smaller houses and high-rise apartments fit for working singles, you will find it all in Chicago. Contact a local rental agent in Chicago to discuss available residential rentals and find out more about specific communities. When moving to Chicago, you will discover welcoming communities and affordable housing. Here is a bit of information on this historic and unimaginably opportunistic city to help get you more familiar with the area and its exciting rental opportunities.

History: In 1837, Chicago was incorporated as a city with a population of just 4,000. Chicago grew as an important trade center in the mid-19th Century, due to the completion of the Illinois-Michigan Canal, which linked Lake Michigan, the Great Lakes, and the Mississippi River system in 1848. Immigrants from many different cultures, including German, Irish, Italian, Czech, Russian and Lithuanian, moved to Chicago seeking economic opportunities. The Great Fire of 1871 that devastated nearly one-third of the city temporarily stunted the city's growth. The area damaged by fire was quickly rebuilt, and by the turn of the 20th century, the city’s population exceeded one million. In 1942, scientists working in Chicago produced the first nuclear chain reaction and advanced the creation of atomic weapons and energy. During its history, Chicago has frequently been the site of national political meetings, including the Republican Party gathering to nominate Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the Democratic Party convention that nominated Hubert H. Humphrey in 1968. Over the course of the last century, Chicago has continued to grow as a financial, industrial, educational and cultural center. Today, the city exists as a cultural mecca, with excellent museums, restaurants, theater and arts.

Economy: Chicago's diversified economy is based on manufacturing, printing and publishing, finance and insurance, and food processing as primary sectors. A substantial industrial base and a major inland port contribute to the city's position as a national transportation and distribution center. Chicago ranks second only to New York in the publishing industry. The city is home to the Federal Reserve Bank, the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Like many large cities, Chicago has a large immigrant population. Despite fears that low-skilled immigrants would not be incorporated into an increasingly high-tech economy, local analysts say the newcomers are following the success track of earlier groups, working their way into the middle class by way of service and labor jobs.

Tourism: Start by visiting Museum Campus. Located near Soldier Field, Museum Campus is home to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium, which is the world's largest indoor aquarium. Next, located on the city’s north side is Lincoln Park Zoo. One of the country’s last free zoos, Lincoln Park is one of the oldest zoos in the country and one of the most modern. Next, there is Brookfield Zoo. Many of the special events are held in the summer, including the Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Blues Festival, and the Chicago Air and Water Show. Sports are big in Chicago. The city is home to two major league baseball teams, a professional football team and hockey team. Catch a game year-round at one of the city’s historic facilities. At night, there is plenty of opportunity to let loose. Visit one of the cities many nightclubs and bars for dancing and mingling. For a mellower evening, grab a slice of famous Chicago-style pizza or head out to enjoy one of the city’s many late night diners.
