History: The town of Denver was founded in 1860. The city was chosen as the state capital of Colorado in 1867. With the arrival of the railroad three years later, the city became a regional transportation hub. Successful gold and silver mining and processing fueled Denver's early economy, and in 1906, a U.S. Mint was established in the city. Denver sustained a period of relatively slow development until the 1930s. Prior to World War II, when such federal government agencies as the Geological Survey, the U.S. Mint, Lowry Air Force Base, the Bureau of Land Management and the Air Force Accounting Center were established in the area, Denver experienced a population surge that continued through the 1950s. During the 1960s, Denver lost population as residents moved to the suburbs to escape inner city deterioration. Growth slowed again in the mid-1970s as a result of the oil industry crisis. The energy boom during the 1970s and 80s led to major growth in Denver. Growth slowed again in the mid-1980s when plans for oil shale development were curtailed; construction of high-rise office buildings downtown nevertheless continued unabated. Today, the city is home to more than 580,000 people, and is Colorado's largest city as well as the industrial, commercial and financial hub of the region.

Economy: The financial and commercial capital of the Rocky Mountain region, Denver's downtown banking district consists of major national and international institutions. The city is the transportation hub for a large portion of the western U.S. Denver is also a Foreign Trade Zone, providing advantages to companies involved in international trade. Denver's central location places it in an advantageous position for future economic development and growth. Analysts predict that the U.S. population is shifting south and west, with future concentration expected in the area from California to Utah and to the Gulf coast in Texas. Projections indicate that the city will become a high-technology research, development and manufacturing hub for the entire Southwest. Employers in Denver choose from a highly educated labor pool. The city ranks second in the nation for the number of residents with bachelors degrees and 64 percent of residents age 24 and older have attended college. Local analysts predict a healthy economy, based on Denver's quality labor force, affordable cost of living, high quality of life and low commercial lease rates.

Tourism: Head over to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The Rocky Mountain region’s leading resource for informal science education, the museum offers a variety of exhibitions, programs and activities help you experience the natural wonders of Colorado, as well as the universe. For the sports fan, Coors Field truly is a-must-see. There you can catch a ball game and stick around after for post-game festivities. Next, check out Denver Zoo. This zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals representing over 700 species. Attractions include a large indoor rainforest featuring both marine and freshwater aquariums, a naturalistic exhibit featuring 14 African species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Then it is time to relax at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Spread across more than 23 acres, this urban garden features more than 15,000 species from around the world. Finally, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts is an exhilarating mix of Broadway shows, professional theatre, acting seminars and breathtaking facilities. The Tony Award-winning Denver Center Theatre Company offers classics and presents blockbuster musical touring shows and productions.
